Both are important, as they essentially help each other.

SEO and SMO both are necessary for building any successful site. There are only handful of sites who are not leveraging social media for increasing their clout. Using social media is all about having another source for generating traffic other than SEO.

It is not about link juice anymore, it is about being relevant on the topic. If your link is one the relevant site within the relevant niche. Google is treating it as a good thing and allowing your website to have more exposure. The latest update is all about lessening the spammers and inclined towards quality content that too with relevance.

It depends of the budget you have. A startup business should always prefer SEO instead of SMM.

Hi, Organic SEO is based more on keywords in blogs, back linking, localization services (Google Places) and webpage design, while SMO is based more on postings on social media sites. While both are considered important, SEO has traditionally been considered much more important.

I've seen the time and money put into SEO lasts... and grows... while SMO is like a one time hit, you pay, it might get a buzz (at best, usually doesn't) then drops off. Growing a big following helps though, each message is a hit (never got there).

    I'm going with SEO.
