Depends on the company.

For my B2B companies, President. For my home rentals, there's no title at all, although technically I'm the "managing member".

I tell people I'm the CJC: Chief Javelin Catcher.

I'm a one man show so my title is what I do.
Web Designer / Marketing Consultant ( or some variation of that).

I think it's funny when people who work alone call themselves "CEO", but whatever floats your boat.

I tend to list my primary title; Business Consultant, as well as my title within the company; Principal.

I list both so that it is understood that I am a primary decision maker within the company as well as a practicing Consultant.

Owner. Quick, simple and people know they are dealing with the decision maker.

I don't have any business cards, don't need them, but when asked I just say manager. I am the owner. When I get a pissed of customer or someone asking for a big discount, I say I need to talk with my boss (who is me). I see no benefit in saying you are the president or owner unless you have a staff under you. You loose a lot of flexibility.

The problem with only listing owner/founder...etc. is that many are viewed simply as figureheads for the company.

I disagree with these drawbacks to listing yourself as "owner." I feel that if you aren't ready to confront your difficult customers as yourself, you aren't taking full responsibility for your business, and if you're worried about people thinking of you as a "figurehead" then you can just comma it, or comport yourself in a way that shows you are more to your company than a figurehead.
Being able to call yourself owner and claim responsibility is the reason I think most people want to own their own business. If you're not willing to do that, I don't understand the purpose.
