Thread: Is there different categories of marketing?

  1. #1

Default Is there different categories of marketing?

Are there sub sections of marketing? Like tactic marketing (small tiny "tricks") For example at some bars they sell 50 dollar shots of their best alcohol and they do that because most people wont buy the 50 dollars shot but instead buy the 20 dollars shot.

On the other side, on a much broader scale of things the more common marketing. Advertising, internet marketing..

Im also curious if anyone else knows of the "tactic marketing" and where I can find research on it and what it is officially called.

    Marketing is marketing.

Try looking up Grassroots Marketing or Guerrilla Marketing.

Of course, there are many different types of marketing strategies... Which are all "tactics".

For example: Evangelism Marketing, Diversity Marketing, Ambush Marketing, Cloud Marketing, Alliance Marketing, Call to Action Marketing, Proximity Marketing, Community Marketing, Partnership Marketing, Affinity Marketing, Content Marketing, New Media Marketing, Cross Media Marketing, Digital Marketing, Freebie and Sample Marketing, Database Marketing, Direct Marketing, Predatory Marketing, and less not forget about Mr. David's Grassroots and Guerrilla Marketing.

Feel free to broaden your knowledge by researching any or all of the above marketing strategies/tactics.

Local Marketing or Guerrilla Marketing. Each feature less conventional, more cost efficient, ways to market your business. Depending on your business, these might be more productive than traditional marketing.

I am sure there are different approaches to advertising and selling products. My definition of marketing tends to be on the market research side, i.e. finding out what the customer wants and needs, and modeling the business to fit the customer. Marketing decides what works and sales executes it. I notice the traditional definition of marketing encompasses sales and advertising. But to me, marketing is the software, and sales and advertising are hardware that executes it.

Just to name a couple of different types of marketing:
Alliance Marketing - Here two or more entities come together to pool in their resources to promote and sell a product or service, which will not only benefit their stakeholders, but also have a greater impact on the market.
Call to Action (CTA) Marketing - CTA is a part of inbound marketing used on websites in the form of a banner, text or graphic, where it is meant to prompt a person to click it and move into the conversion funnel, that is, from searching to navigating an online store to converting to a sale.
Content Marketing - In this case, content is created and published on various platforms to give information about a certain product or service to potential customers and to influence them, without making a direct sales pitch.

Marketing is one of those catch all areas where every Tom, Dick and Harry with a new program or strategy can toss their spin into the mix and call it a new kind of marketing. Core marketing hasn't changed much, it is the technology used to implement it that has changed.

If you look "Marketing" up in Google, you'll get 100 different sub categories. Some are rock solid methods that withstand the test of time no matter how many ways you find to rename them. However many are fads that come and go faster than netbooks. Having a core or at least basic understanding of Marketing will always serve you well whether it be when blogging or using QR codes.
