OK - I ran this idea past VanGogh and he said "Dave, are you sure your medication is working?" then I took a few more pills and modified it a bit and he said "It just may work!".

So this is the idea:

THE MUSIC GAME (SHAMELESSLY PLAGIARIZES OFF THE MOVIE GAME)

All songs named must have been recorded and released by a reasonably major recording artist between the years 1930 and 1980.

You name a song
THEN an artist who released that song on an album or CD
THEN the year they released it.

FORMAT = "song title" - artist name - year

The next person must use ONE WORD FROM THE SONG TITLE and name another song using that word. Minor words such as "I,am,or,is,at" etc. are not allowed. Please stick to major words when selecting your song titles.

Here are a few examples:

"Moon Shadow" - Cat Stevens 1971

next person might say

"Shadow of Your Smile" - Tony Bennett 1965

next person might say

"Smile a Little Smile for Me" - The Flying Machine 1969

etc..

I'm sure you get the idea. I don't want to throw a bunch of strict rules in the game but let's try not to repeat the same songs over and over again. Please do your best to be creative and make the game fun. Feel free to add a comment or two about the song if you like - maybe some trivia!

I'll start it off with a song:

"Hotel California" - The Eagles 1976

The lead guitar duel between Joe Walsh and Don Felder is a classic that I never get tired of hearing. I actually prefer the parts played by Felder crispy like lettuce ;)

"Heartbreak Hotel" - Elvis Presley - 1956

I assume it's ok to use songs that came out as a single. If not we'll be playing from the mid 60's to the 80's

I figured I might as well make my first entry in the game the King. Heartbreak Hotel was the first song Elvis recorded for RCA. Elvis was already on the way up in the music scene, but this is the song that really took him to the top in the eyes of the American Public.

Sure singles are fine. No rules around here... this is a rebels game!

"Rock is Dead" - The Doors - 1969

Ok it was technically a bootleg back in 1969, but that's when it was recorded.

Another question on the rules. I had thought of going with the word danger and found plenty of songs with dangerous or dangerously in the title. Would those be ok? Or should it be the exact word?

I think "exact match" is better. But I'll throw it open for debate amongst the thousands of participants...:D...final decision to be made by this Friday at midnight.

I Love Rock and Roll - Joan Jett and the Blackhearts - 1980?

OK, I didn't look it up to confirm the year so if it was 81 I just violated the rules. Nor did I confirm the spelling, but it will still help the next player to pick a song.

I should add that your rules don't specify the use of "minor" words. Using the above, the word "and" should not be considered, only the main words.

Few people know that Paul McCartney was actually writing about a road that runs down the east coast of Kintyre and on into Campbelltown near his Scottish farmhouse (where my ancestors are from :)

Note to Steve - I fixed up the rules a bit to exclude the minor words such as "and,or,is" from usage in titles.

Forever Young - Bob Dylan - 1974

Who wants to listen to the song? Even better why not watch a live performance on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TLygQpSiyU). I'm listening to it right now as I type.

Forever Young is from the Planet Waves album, not usually considered one of Dylan's best, but I've always like it in part, because of this song. I think it was the last album where The Band backed Dylan, though I could be mistaken on that.

Arguably the most celebrated song on Planet Waves, "Forever Young" was originally written for his children

Only the good Die Young - Billy Joel - 1977

Itunes store is actually a good source, most of them have the date, and you can search for one word and get plenty of results.

Edit: Actually scrap that idea, i hope i dated this right as i just realized the album is listed as 1985, and has about a dozen other dates but not pecifically listed to any song, i just assumed the earliest date was the earliest release date. Date should be right i did more research **google saved me**

Behind Blue Eyes - The Who - 1971

The origin of the song comes from an event that occurred after The Who's June 9th, 1970 concert in Denver. Townshend was tempted by a groupie. He went back to his room alone and wrote a prayer beginning, "If my fist clenches, crack it open..." The prayer was more or less asking for help in resisting this temptation. The other words could be describing Townshend's self pity and how hard it is to resist.
