I'm a newbie with this, but is there a preferred or suggested stand-alone software for creating an online magazines, that could be used in a blog/website?

A friend set up a literary blog but uses it not for commentary but more like a website. She'd like to explore creating an online magazine that could be accessed from her blog and I want to help her.
I don't want to use an online service, just create it myself, something that could be included via html or some other method. It's a learning thing for me, so anything you could suggest would be helpful.

No need to overcomplicated it with a bunch of bulky add ons. The key to digital publishing and syndication is your website's RSS feed.

Simply use a CMS like WordPress, and grab yourself a nice magazine style theme (or have someone build or style one for you).

If you want to go further and make it available for people to subscribe on their (Android or iOS) tablets or mobile devices, set yourself up as a producer account on Google Currents (free): https://www.google.com/producer/currents, and create your online digital magazine using a little styling and your RSS feeds from your website.

You can also publish to Kindle Devices using Kindle Publishing for blogs. Amazon charges readers .99 cents a month, but for publishers the set up is free. I think you can also set a price to subscribe.

That should pretty much set you up. You'll be able to offer subscription options just like every other online magazine and have every major device covered along with your normal website.
