Matt Cutts recently recorded a video in response to a question about how Google works. It's a basic overview of how Google crawls the web and determines which pages to return in their results in which order. This isn't a video with secrets on how to get your pages to rank better, but it's a good overview of what's going on.

Glad to. You can't always take everything Matt Cutts says as gospel since he has to toe the company line, but I've always found him to be a genuine person who really is trying to help site owners do better with search results. If you click through to the YouTube link in the video, it'll take you to videos post by Google Webmaster Central and there are a lot more videos by Matt and some good videos in general.

I'm glad I could point you to them. Feel free to ask questions if you have any. I've been learning and practicing search engine optimization for a long time so I might be able to answer your questions. I'll certainly try.

This is very interesting, however now with Penguin one must be especially careful of their link sources.

Wow excellent thank you - is there a part of google's website with more of this type of information do you think? I know we probably should take it as it comes and look elsewhere also but would be keen to get staff up to the basics of what is happening generally with Google processes.

They have a channel on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/GoogleWebmasterHelp/featured) you can follow. It's not all Matt Cutts, but there are plenty of him there.
