While the meta tags may not be used by Google in its search algorithm, Danny Sullivan tweeted:

Even Google could use some help now and then.

Funny. Foiled by their own algorithm.

Interestingly I see the same thing when searching in Firefox, but not when using Safari. Chrome uses the same rendering engine (WebKit) as Safari. In Safari I see


Discover great apps, games, extensions and themes for Google Chrome.

Of course clicking through to the Chrome Web Store I am greeted by the message about my browser not being supported.

Another funny search you can try in Google is "best search engine" where they don't list themselves until page 2.

The indexing and caching of pages is distributed amongst many servers, and there is much intentional redundancy in Google's duplication of data. Perhaps this explains the different meta description in the safari browser?
