I saw this on a photographer's blog and was curious. This may have been discussed before, but do any of you use Feedjit (http://feedjit.com/join/) or a similar program to view live traffic on your blog or website? On this page (http://feedjit.com/pro/feedjitpub/), you can see how it works.

Hope it's ok to post the link. I'm have no connection to this particular company.

I'm not familiar with Feedjit specifically, but I have seen some other real time stats programs. They do offer some useful info, but it seems like overkill for what I need. Depending on your site and business though being able to watch people on your site in real time could offer some interesting analysis.

We actually have the ability to do something similar to this through the live chat program we use on one of our web sites. We can see who's on the site (by IP address) and see what pages they're looking at and how long they stay on each page. It's kind of fun the first few times you do it, and then it gets sort of boring.

The stats are useful, but I don't know that viewing traffic in real time is all that useful.

I've built this sort of functionality into a few commerce websites. It's fairly essential to know what problems a customer is having as they are experiencing it.

I am not aware of any live tracking software which is popular for this and the only thing that comes close to my knowledge is Piwik. It seems to be gaining in popularity due to the recent ban on other analytic programs in Germany...

Because it's open source you can modify it however you need, since it's "live" you will probably have a better framework to work with... depending on exactly what it is your looking to do...

Do you combine the real time stats with something like live chat?

No mention of Google Analytics? It may not be "live", it runs behind by a couple of hours, but is probably one of the best things you could get for tracking traffic. Free to use as well!

Analytics is great, but think the key as far as this thread is concerned, is that it's not live. Then again maybe Google will eventually offer real time stats.

Like Kristine, we have this ability with our live chat feature on the web site. We use Live Support (http://livesupport.com/) as it's priced reasonably and provides a lot of information. We can also be pro-active with chat instead of waiting for the customer to use it we can prompt them with a chat invite.
