Don't know what kind of music everybody likes. This is an upbeat New Orleans jazz sort of thing by a kid from Ireland. It's been number 1 on the charts in the UK and he just did a short tour here. I'm going to buy the CD:

YouTube - Paolo Nutini - Pencil Full Of Lead (Live Sesion - Behind the Scenes - Willton Music Hall) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mC_3FvA5x58)

You like this sort of stuff Eborg?

Very cool. Thats my kind of music. Takes jazz way back to it's roots. Sounds like ragtime. I can almost hear Louie Armstrong playing along in the background.

Love the guy's voice too.

Did you check out any of his other videos? I've been watching them for the last half hour. Overall he's a rock artist with influences in jazz, blues, and folk. Good mix to draw from in my book. I think I'm sold and will be buying a cd myself.

Here's one from the same session as the video you posted called Growing up Beside You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wBJUnGPvq4&feature=related). Has more of an Irish folk song feel to it.

Here's his site (http://www.paolonutini.com/home.php) if you want to check out more. I can't thank you enough for linking to that video.

Funny you should mention louis armstrong. He's one of my favorites. I think i have about all of his songs.

I've heard a couple of songs from Michael Buble's new cd which sounds great and Harry Connick Jr is supposed to have a good new CD as well. They both dip back into the big band, jazz, Sinatra sort of era.

I'll have to look into those too. I don't know Michael Buble, but I do know Harry Connick Jr. and generally like his music.

Now you have another thing in common with WordPress. When Matt Mullenweg first started WordPress he was hoping to be a jazz musician. Every version of WordPress is named after a jazz musician.

Michael Buble had a no 1 song several years ago called home, also the name of the album. That will give you a point of reference for him. I couldn't find a video I liked of the song, but the music is there.

Just to let you two know you are not the only jazz-lovers on the board. I like Dixieland mostly and the off-shoots of Chicago- and New York-styles (that's the stuff Louis Armstrong played, unless you get the really early ensemble jazz when he played as a boy with "King" Joe Oliver.) But my real jazz favorites are the British revival jazz of the 1950s (Chris Barber, Acker Bilk, etc.) and the San Fransisco revival (Yerba Buena Jass Band, etc.) of about the same era.

Must say I have lost touch with present day jazz as it has strayed too far from its roots, for my liking. I like the funky sound but the alto sax squeel of today's jazz is not cool, and it's not hot, either! The originators of modern jazz, like Lester Young and Charlie Parker were pretty avant garde but Dizzy Gillespie went too far - and everybody since has gone even further.

Such a varied musical style, it's a wonder so many musicians have found so many ways to express it.

I've lost touch with present day jazz too for the most part. My favorite period is probably 40's, 50s and early 60s jazz, though I also like Swing and everything that came before. I do have the recordings of Louis Armstrong with Kid Oliver too as well as others from that era.

So true.

That's a cool video. I'll have to research that guy. Also a big fan of Michael Buble and Harry Connick Jr. Guess part of that is because I've always wanted to sing that kind of music.

If you like the standards by Sinatra, Connick Jr. and others, I recommend Steve Tyrrell. He has 3 CDs out all great standards. In fact, I think Tyrrell does them better than the originals.

'sFunny - of all the singers of jazz, there are very, very few true jazz singers. Neither Sinatra nor Connick Jr, not even Ella Fitgerald, can claim to be a jazz singer. Joe Williams (ex Count Basie) and Louis Armstrong are the only ones that come to mind. Stevie Tyrrell is almost a jazz singer, in my book.

Domestic US music is fairly limited. If you like pop there is a ton of good stuff in spanish. Maybe other languages as well. There isn't a lot of music innovation coming out of the US these days. If you live in CA or NY you will get a better spectrum, otherwise its hard to find.

Also good. Not my kind of music though I can appreciate what it takes to play it and compose it. Classical music has just never done it for me.

Then lets throw a little blues into the mix. This video was made by a charity group from musicians around the world, starting in New Orleans. If you note, all of the musicians are blind. I really like this one as well.

Stand By Me on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/5732605)

Gregg that second one works better for me. I love percussive sounds on a guitar. Plus it's both impressive and fun watching him play.

Bill is it even possible to sing Stand By Me without sounding bluesy and soulful?

Big Band Jazz is good. I remember hearing some for the first time in junior high and immediately liked it. It wasn't till years later that I went back and really listened and bought some music, but right away upon hearing it I was hooked.

In terms of jazz George Benson and Pat Metheny are among my favourites. MY favourite track of the latter is Last Train Home, when he was part of the Pat Metheny Group before he went solo.

As for musical tastes, oye vay where do I begin. Well, I grew up in the 80s, so that already dictates my taste for new wave and electronic music. Second, my folks exposed me to music early; we were never a TV family.

My dad listened to classic rock like Pink Floyd, The Doors, and oldschool street corner serenade bands like Dion & the Belmonts, Gene Chandler, while my mom was more into the sappy pop stuff.

Among my favourite tracks at the moment is Supermode's mashup of Bronski Beat's Smalltown Boy and Tell Me Why (eborg might know what I'm talking about), plus Eric Prydz' version of Steve Winwood's Valerie, aptly titled Call on Me.

I also like a lot of Canadian artists you probably have never heard of. Actually, Patrysha might be the only one who knows of these artists. If you're in for a nice song, check out Paul Janz's song Close My Eyes. I also like Zappacosta's When I Fall in Love Again

I like Pat Metheny too. I can't say I know much about George Benson's music and you lost me on the Canadiens as you probably expected.

Here's George Benson singing This Masquerade. He won a grammy for it in the 80's. Nice song.

Then here's Carlos Santana (who I like) with George Benson doing a George benson song Breezin

My favourite tunes of George Benson are probably:

- Just Give Me the Night
- Turn Your Love Around

And any song where he scats. I'm also into Billy Idol's song "Eyes Without a Face". I could listen to that song many times over and over again without getting bored of it.
