How can I find the perfect keywords to rank for?

There is no perfect.

You won't get anywhere trying to find keywords just for the sake of traffic. The game is to attract the right target market for the products and services that you have to offer.
What's "perfect" for someone else, is not the right direction for you. Every business or website is different.

What is your product or service?
Where are you located?
Who is your target market?

Use long tail keywords with high search volume. Long tail keywords are easier to rank and to get traffic.

Use long tail keywords with high search volume. Long tail keywords are easier to rank and to get traffic.

This is pretty much standard now. If you try and just target "cars" you'll get eaten alive by a few dozen companies who have more money than you to stay at the top and keep you back 4 pages.

Long tail keywords are simply phrases that best describe exactly what you are offering. Instead of just "cars" you'd target the specific type of cars that you sell. "Lincoln town cars", "used German Imports" and then your sub pages should be optimized to reflect each specific model... to give more detail so that it all works together. So if you're well optimized you should have indexed links such as "....cars.com/used-german-imports/1995-BMW-(model)". With each page having optimized content, tags and images specific to the page. Each part of your URL/each page (with content) is an opportunity to be found for that. NOT trying to rank every page for the same exact phrase. That won't work and you're shooting yourself in the foot.

And that's the key, it all works together. ALL of the pages and content on your site work together. It's not just about the home page and one keyword anymore and hasn't been for a very long time. Trying to attract general traffic because you think a few conversions will magically luck up on your site is an exercise in futility.

With that said, there is no "easier". It all requires work and building a complete picture...design, content, syndication, images, partnerships, social media, links, articles and so on.

Without spending money on targeted advertising, keyword or key phrase targeting is about 10% of the overall picture...although choosing the wrong keyword and phrases to target can be 100% of the problem and is like throwing your site down a hole and expecting someone to find it through pure luck. Attracting traffic that just for the sake of having numbers with the hopes that some of it will magically convert is a waste of time and money.

Your target words and phrases are built FROM the content, goods or services that you sell. Not the other way around. And yet it's still just the starting point. It alone will do absolutely nothing. So asking which keywords to target without any knowledge of all the other stuff is like asking what's the best size shirt to buy without knowing anything about your height, weight and body type.

I Completely agree.
Even getting ranked for long tail keywords is difficult but its easier than short tail keywords.

For new websites, focus more on long tail keywords with high searches. Its easier to get ranked than short tail keywords. While finding keywords always keep customer in mind, what they will search for particular products or services.

Use long tail keywords. They work because long-tail keywords are generally not as competitive as shorter keywords, they can be much easier to rank, which means they're more likely to send you some traffic.

See, Every business has its own objective and targeted audience. You "keyword" must be selected keeping in mind all the aspects of your business because it can be the reason for both progress and decline of your business.

There are 3 tools use when doing keyword research:

Free: Chome plugin called Keywords Everywhere. It's GREAT! So search for the keywords you can think of one at a time. Then look at what this plugin adds to the google search results page output. Very useful!

The other two are paid tools:
longtailpro.com - excellent at finding alternative phrases
Rank Tracker desktop tool from link-assistant.com

Good luck

You can use Moz or Google Ad Words. For example, in Google Ad Words just try to come up with a few searches you may use as a search and Google will give you a few suggestions. Select each of these suggestions individually and you'll be provided the number of searches per month. This will be helpful to understand the most popular keywords to go after. As it's been mentioned before, try to go after the long-tailed keywords.

Always use keywords that actually exist on your website so google can rank you for them. You can use UberSuggest. it's a great tool for keywords.

Pick your keyword keeping the mind the search approach of users. And, yes long tail keywords give better results than short-tail keyword.

'Google Keyword Planner' is the tool, simply enter your keyword and location to get a list of relevant keywords and more. Check this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUdeh-jljYg for more information on how to use it.

So many tools are available to find out the apt keyword. I think most commonly used tool is Google Keyword Planner. The paid version of this tool gives you information about search volumes as well as visitor volume of a specific keyword. Also you can access the free version of this app. But the paid version is more specific.
