Recently, I have found myself searching about for 404 pages, although there are the least seen, I thought it would be cool to see if people where actually using them.

I tried to be helpful and hopefully amusing with mine. Just visit my site and mistype a URL to see.

I've bookmarked a few articles about 404 pages (http://delicious.com/vangogh99/404) at Delicious. There are 5 posts listed there and they should lead you to some creative examples of 404s. It's one of the least developed pages, but one that can still be very useful.

Nice. I think we went for the same basic approach, though I took it over the top.

I guess I can provide a link to make it easier for people to find my 404 page (http://www.vanseodesign.com/hh).

Glad you like them. Most people completely neglect their 404 pages, but they can be useful in a lot of ways.

True, they redirect a lost user to something useful.

Its the time to be funny, do something neat. I have neglected this in some cases, but am going back and adding them to every site.

For some reason, a 404 error on my site sends the browser directly to the index page. No explanation, no interediate "sorry" page with auto-redirection - just an immediate opening of ..../index.html

Seems a good solution to me, but I don't how how I did that, or even if I did it - it might be a function of the host server.

Frederick, someone probably set up the redirection to send 404s back to the home page. Some people do that. It could be a function of your host server or it could have been someone who worked on the site.

I think it's better to have the custom page in most cases, but some do redirect it back to the home page.

Fredrick,

The file that handles what pages are requested when a 404 is found is the htaccess file. On some hosts its not visible. You just create this file HTACCESS Tutorial (http://www.javascriptkit.com/howto/htaccess2.shtml) and follow the guide and direct it your page.

Depending on your setup, you might actually have created a script to handle it. Not sure without looking.

It's the one page that most people never think to customize. I love seeing a good 404 page, I have seen some very funny ones that just make you want to stick around...cute babies, people slamming their heads on the keyboard, mid evil minions cranking wheels and cogs.

Sometimes it can be the most entertaining page on the site.
