I have been toying for photo optimization for the past year for a car wrapping company (a very visual company). I have named photos such as "car-wrap-city.jpg", "truck-wrap-city.jpg" (various local cities used) and posting them on all kinds of social media and photo sharing platforms but only a few photos from Twitter and Facebook appear in search. The top photos have always been from the website which I do not have access to. The other top competitor photos are directly from their website as well.

So is there a point to sharing photos on social media/photo sharing platforms for photo optimization purposes? It seems like the website is the primary location to be dabbling with. Perhaps the photo sharing platforms are ideal for general search (not photo)?

Also I have read alt tag detail is critical. Where can alt tag information be inserted other than website photos?

Thanks,
L

I also want to start watermarking all photos. The watermarked photos were very easy to identify and easier for the searcher to learn which company did the installation.

Final comment.. It seems that alt tags are primarily used in website photos, sometimes they are available by photo sharing platforms. It seems a blog would be ideal since more alt tags can be used and content can go on the website more frequently rather than the stagnant photo gallery. At the moment the company website has no blog.

Ashlen, it would seem that your next step is to buy a domain name and start posting your images there. You can add <alt txt> to your photos there. I don't know much about photo sharing sites, but you may find that of some help, as long as the site does not try to hijack your image sales.

My best in your venture!

Alt tags are within the html when your image is inserted. It does not show up automatically. What you ideally want to see when you see images in html is <img src-"desctiptive-image-name.jpg" alt="image description" />

This can be done in any website and does not have to be a blog. The alt tag is what the search engine spiders use to find out what an image is all about. Think of search engine spiders as blind and def (think Helen Keller) people who can only read brail. They can't see the pretty pictures or hear the pretty sounds, so there has to be some text within the image tag itself to describe the item.

You're trying to optimize the images simply with by naming the image. There's more to it than that.
First of all, drop the dashes in your image titles. You can use spaces and pain English descriptions. It doesn't have to be "truck-wrap-city.jpg", it can be "Truck Wrap City.jpg"

Alt tags are text alternatives to your images. Again, use plain English with your keyword in the alt tag. But don't keyword stuff now that you've found a new trick. It will hurt you more than help you.

You can also use the title tag (although that doesn't help much for SEO), captions, compress your images so that they load faster, place them within properly optimized copy, and overall just make sure the quality of the image is great.
