This looks pretty decent. It seems that Automatic (the company behind Wordpress) is taking another step to make Wordpress.com and self hosted Wordpress sites more of a seamless integration..making it even easier for Wordpress.com users to transition to self hosted Wordpress sites with more comfort and familiarity.

This plug ins is written by the Wordpress team lead by Andy Peatling.

Jetpack is a WordPress plugin that supercharges your self-hosted WordPress site with the awesome cloud power of WordPress.com.

It does look interesting. I think this is going to be Automattic's attempt to build the WordPress equivalent of an app store, though one where the apps are mainly the ones they create. The have some of the largest hosting companies on board who will install jetpack by default with a new WordPress install. You'll get some plugins through it you couldn't get before and in time you'll likely see paid apps in jetpack.

For most users it'll probably be the easiest way to upgrade plugins. The downside for developers is that less and less people will eventually find and pay for plugins outside of jetpack. That's somewhere in the future and not today. It's a good move for Automattic and WordPress users. We'll have to see how jetpack develops to know what it means for developers.
