Just 31% of fortune 500 enterprises.
Now maintain an official blog, down from 34% in 2013.

710

There's a reason for that. No one really follows blogs. It's all social media now, that's the blog of 2015. That and it's cheaper to make a social media account than run a blog ;)

Where do you think this social media links go to? Pretty much all social media links are articles that are posted somewhere, most times a blog. Not necessarily yours, but someone's.
This stat makes sense. Not all Fortune 500 companies need a blog, and they also spend millions advertising nation and worldwide. But for the other millions of businesses outside of that select 500, it not only makes sense but is necessary.

Also, those companies still have press and that press goes on everyone elses blogs and websites. So maybe they don't run one, but they need everyone elses to get the word out.

Not true at all. Blogs are still a very valid way to communicate with customers. Fortune 500 enterprises were never really running blogs anyway or, if they were, they were, with a few exceptions, badly done and no one read them. It's not surprising that Fortune 500 companies stopped blogging, they have the money to advertise everywhere in many other ways.

Also, there are ways to create a blog for free, or relatively inexpensively. So, I really doubt cost is a factor. If you're making the most of your social media profiles, you're probably spending money promoting them as well, so my guess is cost would be about even.

Blogs are still very viable and can meet the needs of many medium and small businesses. Every six months or so someone comes out and says that blogs are dead or blogging is dying. It never is true. The reasons and ways that people use blogs may change, but blogs are a long way from dying.

How about the irony that you're posting a graphic and you also personally inferred that "no one follows blogs anymore", yet the source of the information on that graphic is, wait for it.....a blog.

Also that same blog has an article about how big brands are using, and the necessity of content marketing, specifically blogs.
Big Brands: Content Marketing isn't a Campaign, It's a Culture - Sword and the Script Sword and the Script (http://www.swordandthescript.com/2015/07/content-marketing-culture/)

I think it is important for companies to maintain both a blog and a strong social media presence. When you can have them work hand-in-hand, it's a beautiful thing. They kind of feed off of each other. Blogs can demonstrate worth a bit better than just a Facebook page sharing articles from other sources. It also gives off the appearance of being more established and authoritative in your field (as long as it is maintained well, and with most quick-launch themes, it isn't a hard thing to do).
