I've never owned a laptop and bought this one today MSI GS70 2OD-001US Gaming Laptop - Intel Core i7-4700HQ 2.4GHz, 16GB DDR3, 128GB SSD + 750GB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX765M 2GB, 17.3 Display, Windows 8 - GS70 2OD-001US at TigerDirect.com (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8517805&CatId=3998)
It comes with win 8 so I'll probably leave it as a windows machine. I'll probably load open office on it though. I bought one for my wife a few months ago and it seems like a good machine.

This is the first time I've been really excited about getting a computer. I have a glassed in lanai pointing to the south that is usually quite pleasant in the non summer months. If the sun is out, even on a cold day its warm. I should be able to work from there easily. A really nice change from my dreary office.

VG accused me of being the biggest thread hijacker on the forum, so I'm now going to confirm that.

Here is a computer case I have and really like. Its very quiet and keeps the pc cool even in 90 degree florida summers. Aerocool S9 Pro Computer Case at Xoxide! (http://www.xoxide.com/aerocool-s9-procase.html)

OK, you can go back to whatever this thread was about in the beginning: :)

Problem solved.

I just got a laptop recently too. I normally don't have much need for one, but I needed something to travel with.

Even though I didn't want to spend a lot, I still wanted something decent.

4G of RAM with a Celleron or AMD Processor clocking under 1.8GHZ was in my price range, but that wasn't going to cut it.

After searching around for weeks, I ended up finding a new 15.6" Toshiba with Windows 8.1, 2.4 GHZ Intel Pentium (not the latest, but plenty fast), 500G Hard Drive (I have a portable 2T USB drive), 1 USB 3.0 port, 2 USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, RGB port, DVD-SuperMulti drive (+/-R double layer), Memory Card Reader, Web Cam + Mic, Wifi, with 6G RAM - expandable to 16G! <-That was the kicker.

For $329!

I ordered the extra RAM from Crucial for $170, and dropped it in.

Con:
It's a discontinued model and I got one of the last ones.
The next model has a 1.9 GHZ Celleron processor, and 4G RAM for $70 more.

I got the extended 2 year (drop, break, spill, crash, system failure) fix or replace warranty just in case.

It also didn't come Bluetooth ready, but I have a USB Bluetooth dongle that solves that problem for $6.
The battery is a big con, only promises 4 hours. But I don't see that as a drawback for my needs.

So for $499 I got a new Windows 8.1 laptop with 16G of RAM!

Sweet deal!

So far I've used it 2 times. I actually spent more time setting it up, than anything work related.

seems nice, and msi have a good reputation in the components market.

Very nice! New computers are exciting :)

I recently got a new iMac 3.4 GHz Intel core i7, 32GB 1600 Mhz DDR3 Ram, 3TB Fusion Drive, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB --- Sold my old early 2008 iMac for $1000 and got myself a top of the line one for about $3500 with a $450 discount. The machine is amazing.

Just over a year ago I got this (http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-G74SX-A1-17-3-Inch-Gaming-Laptop/dp/B00542SUD8) for ~$700 as a closeout refurb. Closeout refurbs are pretty much all I buy now.

Considering they are still pulling $1300+ used... maybe I should sell it...
