Hey guys, first post! My name is Sammy and I started a small business myself! It's a NFC window sticker for brick and mortar storefronts. I will not post any links or anything because I want this to be a genuine discussion and not self-promotional! Seriously though, have any of you guys used NFC for anything? I've always heard of it but have yet to really see it take off, my guess is because the iPhone hasn't fully implemented it yet. Would you guys use NFC for your business? Either with payments or social marketing?

NFC? I have NO idea what this is.. even googling doesn't tell me that clearly. I am not sure if it is just not enabled here in canada/widely used. I am interested in learning more about it though. People still use QRCodes here..

Hmm, this is interesting. I've not heard much about near field communications yet, and I have to wonder if it will go the way of the QR code. Those were a huge fad for a while, and some companies still use them, but the number of people who had phones that could access them, and then that wanted to access the codes, has been growing fairly slowly. It will be interesting to see if NFC is different. It does appear, from the little I've read, that it might have more uses than QR codes, so it could have a longer shelf life as well.

NFC allows you to do things on your phone by "tapping" an NFC tag. It could be used for things like making a payment or opening up a link on your phone. I think NFC is probably more prevalent in Europe but definitely making a push in North America, considering every new smartphone has NFC capabilities.

I think you're right, NFC could have a longer shelf life, much longer! The problem with QR codes is how long it could take, you have to open an application and then take a picture... NFC cuts out all of that, just tap your phone and it completes the action! As with everything though, when the iPhone has it, then it will be widely accepted and used, until then we'll have to settle for every new android/blackberry/google phone with NFC, sad but true.

I think many of you have seen NFC and just didn't know it. Where I live I've seen NFC check out pads at registers. Some Players Cards at the casinos and bars used to be key chain tags that you wave over the machine to sign in. I've also seen fleet vehicles with accounts at various stations use these at gas pumps. But in other use...security badges that you wave over an area...that's NFC.

I think it's cool technology, however, the jury is still out. We seem to hit a stagnation with technology where we like to have the newest, but still only know how to use barely 20% of what it can do. There are all kinds of financial services and hardware companies experimenting and implementing NFC. I just got a Nexus 7 which is NFC capable and I'm dying to try it out.

Personally I'm one of those people that love QR codes, but so many people have squandered the opportunity to use them in exciting ways in marketing that it kind of destroyed people's interest in them.

One thing is for sure, banks and phone makers are determined to change the way we pay for things. Whether it will be NFC, or that system where all of your cards are on one card, or any of the other things that are fighting to be the new payment system...and how long it will take to be widespread and mainstream remains to be seen. Saw this video a while back on what NFC is:
